Water extraction removes free water — water that has not yet been absorbed into building materials — from floors, subfloors, and cavities as rapidly as possible. Every litre of water removed by extraction is water that does not need to be evaporated by the drying system. Extraction is approximately 1,200 times more efficient than evaporation as a moisture removal method. This is why extraction quality and speed determines the total cost and duration of every water damage job.

The goal of extraction is not just to remove visible water from floor surfaces. Effective extraction also addresses water that has migrated into carpet and underlay, penetrated into floor coverings, and infiltrated into the base of wall cavities. Water that is not extracted from these locations must be evaporated — a process that takes significantly longer and requires more equipment.

Extraction must begin as soon as the site is confirmed safe for entry and the water source is controlled. Do not wait for assessment documentation to be complete before beginning extraction. In practice, a second technician documents and photographs while the first begins extraction. Every hour of delay on a significant water loss adds material damage costs and extends the drying timeline.

Practical application: At every water loss callout, extraction begins within the first hour of site attendance. Photograph the site before, during, and after extraction. Record the volume of water extracted where your equipment provides this measurement.
