So You Have Hired Staff, Now What?

Hiring Staff in the cleaning and restoration industry
Owning and running a cleaning business is hard. You have finally reached your goal of being able to hire staff and stop working in the field. It can be hard to sit back and watch while others do the work. Or maybe you have clients who are attached to you and struggling with the change over.

Some people find they lose the motivation when they are no longer working in the field. They were previously exhausted running around trying to get all the admin tasks, and jobs in the field done. They had become accustomed to always being “on”. Whilst these qualities can be valuable assets when launching and building a business, they can in turn become liabilities as the business becomes more developed.

This is not always a once off situation. As the business grows, more staff are brought on and the responsibilities of the owner become less and less. The company is running smoothly, clients are happy, employees understand what they are doing, and the cash flow is healthy.

Now that you are spending time working ON your business rather than IN, there are some things that you should be focusing on. Managers are brought on to MANAGE employees. This means that solving staffing issues, training, and more should be left to the manager and not the owner. You may consult with the manager to prevent similar issues from arising. The manager you have hired needs the opportunity to grow into their role which will not happen when an owner is doing their job for them.

Spending time on your business should include focusing on ways to increase your business. This could include researching new products and services that become available to the market. The cleaning industry is constantly growing and expanding with new products and technology becoming available. As the owner of a cleaning company, you may begin to invest in additional equipment to be able to expand into other areas. For example if you have a residential cleaning company, you may choose to invest into the carpet cleaning industry. If you already perform carpet cleaning services, you may wish to expand into the anti-allergy market.

As a business owner, you may decide you want to spend more time on creating a positive culture within your team. This could include team building exercises, changing the way you interact with your team, and more. To change the standard of behaviour within a business, you need to lead by example. By creating a positive culture within your business, staff turn over can be reduced which leads to happy employees and often savings on training and inducting new employees.

CARSI’s membership packages offer support no matter what stage of your business you are at. We aim to help streamline your administration tasks, provide new services that you can provide, and more. In Australia, training can be difficult to obtain especially at the moment with travel restrictions in place. Cleaners are expected to be qualified with education, training, and experience. Along with on the job training, it is also often required by national, state, and local legislation that staff are trained in health and safety.

Make sure you cover yourself and provide the training necessary to protect your staff and your company!
